US market hours and tax, in Singapore terms

Trading US shares from Singapore involves a time difference, a ticker convention and a withholding tax. This page sets out each of them plainly.

US market hours in Singapore time

US daylight saving shifts twice a year, which moves every Singapore-time equivalent by an hour. The New York Stock Exchange publishes the authoritative calendar including market holidays.

US dividend withholding tax

Tax treatment depends on your own circumstances and on the current rules. We are not tax advisers. Check the IRS and IRAS publications, or speak to a qualified adviser, for your own position.

The United States generally withholds tax on dividends paid to non-resident holders. For a Singapore-resident individual holding US shares directly, the rate commonly applied is 30%.

There is no Singapore–United States double tax agreement that reduces this rate for individuals. Where a treaty does reduce it, the rate depends on the holder's residence and status.

Funds and exchange-traded funds may be domiciled outside the United States, which changes how their dividends are treated. Domicile, not the underlying assets, usually determines the withholding position.

Tickers and what they identify

  • A US ticker identifies a specific security on a specific exchange. The same letters can mean different things on different exchanges.
  • Exchange-traded funds have their own tickers and their own domicile, which affects dividend and estate tax treatment.
  • Some securities trade under more than one class with different voting rights.

What you get in the group

  • Changes pushed to you. T-bill auction results, SSB issues, SORA moves, dividend dates and earnings results — each one sent when it is published, with the official source and the date it applied.
  • Rules looked up, not decided for you. Ask what a scheme actually allows and you get the official publication and where the rule sits — not a view on what you should do.
  • The same information, read together. Discussion about how to read public information, where disagreement is normal.
  • One sourcing standard. Official sources first, a date on every figure, estimates labelled as estimates, and corrections made in the open.

What the group does not have:

  • Buy or sell recommendations, target prices or position sizing
  • Return promises of any kind
  • Stock picks or individual case analysis
  • Placing orders or handling money on your behalf
  • Anything paid, sponsored or paid for by referral
